Last night I had the opportunity to receive feedback from my peers at Northeastern. Their feedback has provided me with important next steps for this project, but more importantly for my collaboration with my partner district leadership. Based upon the feedback, I believe that our work is relevant and necessary if we are to ensure that we engage and empower our students in preparation for their future.
Below are my take-a-ways from our convening:
1. Clearly define the framework for the work, once we select a framework. At this point, we are engaged in a self-assessment of our individual schools using New England Secondary School Consortium's Tool - Global Best Practices: for Secondary Learning, An Internationally Benchmarked Self-Assessment. Once we have completed and shared our self-assessments, we will be better poised to finalize our action plans and next steps. We agree that the landscape of education is changing. We recognize that students need greater opportunities for authentic problem solving. We acknowledge that students must develop 21st Century skills to be prepared for college and career in a global marketplace.
2. Share findings and the resources we use along the way to benefit others on a similar journey. This website is my attempt to provide access to the resources, research, literature and thought processes used in our study of our current reality, as well as any decisions we make moving forward. We are currently in the exploration and study phase of the process. The resources available to date represent only our investigation.
3. Include a wider group of stakeholders. We are three weeks into investigating innovative and promising practices in high schools. It is our intention to bring in high school principals, teacher leaders and students as we move deeper into the study and ultimately make decisions that could potentially lead to redesign. We fully agree that we will need to include a wider group of stakeholders and develop systems of communication beyond even the expanded group.
4. Create a website walk-through. I agree that a walk through may be a useful tool. I am considering posting a screen cast that highlights the major focus areas of the site to help anyone interested in using the website as a resource navigate the different pages.
The opportunity for collaboration with colleagues outside of my working group has provided me with great insight. I appreciate the feedback and suggestions, and believe that they will enhance and support our work moving forward.
